Soviet-Afghan War

It’s difficult to merge Sufi Jaffar’s two worlds. I’ve witnessed him at prayer, brilliantly officiating at village disputes, and leading his 12,000-man army with uncontested authority. At the same time, I’ve watched him careening on his motorcycle like a crazed Hell’s Angel, drink vast amounts of alcohol and smoke an addict’s supply of hashish. He weaves between the West and Afghanistan, not seamlessly, but like a madman out of control.
