Soviet-Afghan War
Alex and I film the detonation of Soviet land mines in a field outside of Kabul. Lt. Colonel Tereshenko, in charge of the operation, says the Afghan army will decide whether to dismantle the mines or keep them intact.
I ask, “Aren’t the land mines placed without Afghan soldiers and recruits knowing their location, in order to prevent them from deserting?”
Tereshenko lets out a big guffaw. “That is up to the Afghan army.”
