As we leave Kabul heading north, Lt. Gayduk talks about the route to Hairaton at the Soviet border. “We call this the ‘Road of Life.’ We control the road from five in the morning till six in the evening. After six, neither Soviet nor Afghan transport travels on the road because it is controlled by the mujahideen. Today the road is controlled by two masters.”
