Faces In The Book

The only person on this journey with whom I have an instant rapport is Dr. Abdul Subhan. It’s easy to misinterpret Dr. Subhan’s westernized demeanor. But his views on certain topics are much the same as most Afghans fighting jihad.

Dr. Subhan is very firm in his belief in the Koran, especially the verse, “Thou shall not kill.”

“What happens if you kill?” I ask.
“You go to hell.”
“What about if you kill a Russian?”
“No,” he replies, shocked. “A Russian is an infidel. You can kill as many Russians as you want and still go to paradise.”
