El Salvador Civil War

Dr. Castillo makes it clear how elastic the truth is in his country. He offers me a piece of sagacious advice. “No one in El Salvador speaks the truth when they are sober. If they are drunk, if the person knows you, and there is no one in hearing distance – then, they might blurt out a piece of their own truth.”

The exception is the soldier or officer, who only in combat and close to death, reveals the truth without the aid of a bottle of Tic Tac or a six pack of Suprema.
